Frequently Asked Questions: ORIS Color Tuner

Question: I'm happy with my proofing system now. Why should I look at yours?
ORIS Color Tuner offers contract-level proofing at a fraction of the cost of analog or so-called "high-end" digital proofing. It is also the perfect complement to Computer-To-Plate (CTP) which is rapidly making analog proofing obsolete.
Question: How much money can I save with ORIS proofing?
The cost of a 4-up ORIS Proof is about $6. A comparable digital proof, using Kodak Approval, costs about $40 each. ORIS Proofs represent an 85% savings!
Question: Isn't inkjet proofing a second-rate solution - good for content, maybe, but not for color?
Not all inkjet systems are the same. ORIS Color Tuner is a unique combination of software, paper and ink - designed to overcome the limitations of inkjet technology. ORIS is a true contract proofing solution.
Question: What's so special about your software?
ORIS is not just an inkjet RIP. It's a complete proofing workflow system. We've combined high-end color management with hotfolder-based automated workflow, so you can proof any digital file, and match any target.
Question: Does your software handle ICC profiles?
Yes. ORIS can use any ICC profile, and we generate editable device link profiles, but we aren't limited solely to ICC or curve editing. Our software was designed to overcome the inherent limitations of inkjet technology. Even difficult custom colors can easily be proofed by ORIS Color Tuner.
Question: I've heard your software is complicated. How can I use it without hiring a color guru?
ORIS Color Tuner is powerful software, but we've made it simple for regular users. Our Automatic Calibration feature makes it easy for anyone to keep an inkjet device aligned. Also, once the software is set up, users just drag and drop files into hotfolders. They never have to deal with the application itself.
Question: What's Automatic Calibration?
AutoCal is Color Tuner's unique approach to device control. All you do is output a test target on your inkjet, run it through a strip reader, and ORIS automatically adjusts the printer to a standard behavior.
Question: Your proofing paper costs more than regular inkjet paper. Why should I buy yours?
Ordinary inkjet paper was never meant for proofing. For example, with most other stocks, you get a significant dryback problem - the colorants shift over time, some colors faster than others! A proof might be fine when you first print it, but by the time your customer sees it, the colors will have shifted! That's not good enough for a proof. CGS papers are designed to avoid dryback.
Question: I do a lot of advertising work. Is ORIS SWOP certified?
Yes. The ORIS Digital Proofing System was the first of its kind to be SWOP certified, both on Epson and Canon.
Question: What about Pantone spot colors and Hexachrome?
ORIS Color Tuner is the leading system for proofing spot or custom colors, as well as Hexachrome. We handle spot colors separately from CMYK, so you are able to proof your customers' important identity colors without interfering with process color proofing.
Question: What about screen proofing? Some of my customers have to see dots.
Color Tuner has a screen proofing option, ORIS ScreenDot, which allows your customers to check for moiré and similar problems - on color accurate ORIS inkjet proofs.
Question: We work with several different file formats. Will I need to change my workflow to use ORIS?
No. ORIS Color Tuner can accept all major digital file formats, so you don't need to change anything.
Question: Does ORIS handle remote proofing?
Yes. In fact, we go well beyond what many vendors mean by "remote proofing." With the new AutoCal wizard in version 5.1, any remote user can easily keep a Canon or Epson device aligned.
