Virtual Proofs; Real Results!

As print production becomes more distributed globally, and as deadline pressures continue to tighten, print designers and producers need a practical, integrated approach to color collaboration and approval. Hard copy proofing, the most reliable means of assuring contract quality color, must be combined with the speed and convenience of display-based approval systems. The answer to this problem is ORIS Soft Proof.

ORIS Soft Proof uses Adobe Acrobat for viewing, annotating and digitally signing ORIS-generated PDF/X files on qualified color displays.
ORIS Soft Proof uses the same professional color management engine as ORIS Color Tuner – technology that made the system the first of its kind to be certified by SWOP, FOGRA, PPA and 3DAP, as well as winner of the 2003 GATF InterTech Award for innovation. By using a common framework for both hard and soft proofs, and by maintaining a link between the two, ORIS provides a “best of both worlds” approach to collaborative color workflow.
The workflow is simple, and very effective. ORIS Hotfolder Manager (which ships with Color Tuner for Windows) automatically generates a color matched PDF/X-3 file, and sends it to a predefined location. Email notification is a standard part of the system. At the same time, a hard proof file is also created, and is placed in a “hold” location, for optional, on-demand output by the person viewing the soft proof.
The PDF/X soft proof can be viewed by anyone, using Adobe Acrobat (Professional or Standard). Acrobat’s powerful color measurement and annotation tools can be used at any time to record user feedback, and legally-binding digital signatures may be attached to the file. The annotation tools may be used locally, or as part of a collaborative, online review process. The ORIS plugin is used to verify the file’s status (namely, was it created by ORIS, and to the required color standard) and whether color management status and the display profile is correct. There is also an ORIS Soft Proof stamp, which records the current color status (approved or rejected) as well as the date and user ID, as a trackable Acrobat annotation.
The ORIS plugin serves another very important function: on-demand hard copy output. Even when display-based review is used, any user may output the current version of the job at any time, at contract quality, using the ORIS Digital Proofing System.

Soft proof files are generated and sent automatically by ORIS Color Tuner, which uses the same professional color engine to create on-demand hard proof files.
Unlike proprietary soft proofing systems, ORIS Soft Proof does not require a “per-click” or “per-job” fee. Viewing is unlimited, and is designed to fit any standard, Acrobat-based review process. Monitor calibration of high-quality displays can easily be done, using low-cost hardward and software from companies like GretagMacbeth and X-Rite, and the monitor profiles are automatically read and verified by the ORIS plugin.
The ORIS approach to soft proofing is beneficial to graphic arts businesses in many ways. Commercial printers can use a combination of ORIS Soft Proof and a remote copy of ORIS Color Tuner Light to provide better service, and much faster turnaround, for their key customers. Because the ORIS solution uses Adobe Acrobat, packaging and label printers can easily incorporate it into their digital review process – for brand managers, prepress companies and printers, in different cities or countries.
Publishers will also benefit from the ORIS approach. Magazines and their advertisers will enjoy shorter, more efficient review cycles, without losing the ability to produce reliable, contract quality hard copy proofs at any point in the process, at any location in the world! Catalog publishers will also increase efficiency during the design and production process, no matter where the catalog is produced or printed. Publication printers can also use ORIS for integrated soft and hard copy proofing, of single pages or whole signatures, to improve their operational efficiency and retain their key customer’s confidence.
ORIS Soft Proof is part of a powerful new color-managed workflow system from CGS: ORIS Color Tuner PLUS! This includes options for color managed, high-resolution output for any digital press or CTP system, as well as automatic GCR/UCR and file conversion.
